Human freedom and economic freedom indexes — Cato, Freedom House and Fraser. Compare countries by personal and economic liberty.
Where you can travel is one thing; how free a place is to live in is another. Freedom indexes try to quantify that — covering personal liberties (movement, expression, assembly, rule of law) and economic freedom (property rights, regulation, trade, sound money). For expats, nomads and anyone choosing a base, they're a useful counterweight to glossy destination marketing.
The Cato Human Freedom Index combines personal and economic measures into one score. Freedom House focuses on political rights and civil liberties, and the Fraser Institute's Economic Freedom of the World ranks the business and property environment. Read them together — a country can score very differently across the three.
